Missionary Beat: February 1, 2014

Around the web today for stories of interest to future missionaries, missionary moms, returned missionaries, member missionaries, and missionaries of every sort and variety.

  • Luke Jones “BYU-Idaho enrollment up despite lower missionary age”– [Video] When the mission age was lowered many prognosticators saw plummeting enrollment numbers at many universities in the Intermountain West. At least one university is defying the expectation. “Many students are choosing to take deferments so they can go on their mission, and the return with a guaranteed spot at BYU-I”
  • Sarah Jane Weaver “Moment: Member Impacted Missionary Work in Philippines”– How did the Church begin to grow in the Philippines? One woman. “When the history of the work in the Philippines is properly written, it must include the story of Sister Maxine Grimm, who served with the Red Cross in the Pacific campaigns of the Second World War. She married an American army officer, and after the war they established their home in Manila. She did all she could to teach the gospel to others; she pleaded that missionaries be sent.”
  • NTDaily “A long way from home: the lives of Mormon missionaries– What’s it like being a missionary at the University of North Texas? The local student newspaper wanted to find out. “The commitment Zohner and Christensen have made to serve as missionaries was voluntary, but they must live by a strenuous set of rules. Inside the Denton apartment they share, Zohner and Christensen have no computer or television access. They share a portable DVD player to view missionary training videos and an iPod loaded with religious music. They are not allowed to use headphones.”
  • Shelby Osmond “The Book of Mormon – This stunningly produced video hints at the way The Book of Mormon can help the spiritual life of families. “The Book of Mormon is our way of drawing closer to  Heavenly Father. ‘Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and He will direct thee for good.'”
